The Chinese Settlement — stone and mud-brick dwellings built by Chinese miners who came to work the Arrow River gold claims in the 1860s — is one of the most moving historic sites in Central Otago. Beyond the history, Arrowtown sits at the edge of serious high country: the Crown Range, the ghost town of Macetown, the Kawarau Gorge, and the Arrow River all accessible on foot.
