French Ridge Hut sits at 1,445m above the West Matukituki Valley in Mount Aspiring National Park — a DOC hut with one of the finest views in the New Zealand backcountry. The climb from Raspberry Flat is steep and sustained (approximately 1,100m over 5 km), but the reward is a ringside seat to the Bonar Glacier, the French Ridge, and the full western face of Mount Aspiring (Tititea). Experienced mountaineers use French Ridge Hut as a staging point for Aspiring summit attempts. Getting there under your own power and waking up to that view is one of those experiences that shifts your sense of what's possible in the New Zealand mountains. Hand-drawn topographic art capturing the Matukituki Valley and French Ridge terrain.
