Isthmus Peak Track is one of the Southern Lakes' finest day hikes — a 16 km return walk that climbs from the isthmus between Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka to a 1,385m summit with one of the most distinctive views in New Zealand. From the top, both lakes are visible simultaneously — Lake Wanaka to the west and Lake Hawea to the east — spread out in deep blue below you. It's a view that makes the geography of the Southern Lakes suddenly make sense. The Isthmus Peak Track is quieter than Roy's Peak but every bit as rewarding, and the drive to the trailhead along the Hawea-Timaru Road passes through high-country farmland that's beautiful in its own right.
